  1. Babe Ruth is probably the most overated athelete in american sports history. He played in an era when the average height of ball players were about 5'9 and players were smoking cigs and eating dogs on the field. Not only that, but in the 30's and prior, ball players didnt make enough money to have the sport as their only job. babe was hitting against chimney sweepers and accountants. the game was a pastime, not a profession. although babe was dominant. he wouldn't hit 20 homers against todays staff. Hes a great icon, a great player, but far from the most talented in existence. the best player to ever play the game from the offensive standpoint was pete rose and a defensive stanpoint was either dom damaggio or derek jeter
